The Thundering Smoke: The Price of Freedom by Guy Quigley tells the story of Tom Sutton’s broken journey through the wild lands of Africa and Ireland during the Irish Revolution. At first, Sutton drowns himself in drink after his wife’s horrendous death and he thinks his son is dead. But the kindness of an orphan girl saves him. Rhodesia’s rails and gold mines are where their journey ends at the roaring mist of Victoria Falls, where family land gives them unstable comfort. Violence, on the other hand, forces Sutton to choose between love and revenge. The way the author weaves together death and rebirth makes for an epic saga where people’s resolve goes up against fate’s harsh currents. Highly recommended for fans of historical fiction.

Very well researched story

The Thundering Smoke: BOOK1 The Price of Freedom by Guy Quigley is the first installment in a series that will follow Tom Sutton in his journey from Ireland to the heart of Africa. Tom fought in the Liberation War in Ireland in the early 1920s and struggles with the events that happened in the conflict. His wife dead from a horrific event and his son missing, Tom looks for a new beginning and finds himself in Africa. Soon he and a girl named Heidi make their way to Victoria Falls where they hope to start a new life away from the violence in Ireland. But violence has a tendency to creep its way back into even the most peaceful lives. Quigley has done an excellent job of bringing this piece of history to life in a realistic yet entertaining way. The Liberation War in Ireland marked a turning point in the history of the country and its relations with England, and the author has presented this in a way that shows the history in a simple but captivating light. The events in Africa also show the history of European ties to the continent. Fans of historical fiction will greatly enjoy this and the well researched insights the author has put into the work.

A Heartfelt Story

A heartfelt story about heartbreak, loss, inner demons, survival, hope, and love. Even though the main character, Tom Sutton, is dealing with so much bloodshed and cruelty during the war in Ireland, along with addiction, he ends up finding a new purpose in life after moving to Africa and developing special connections with other people. The author did a great job of creating complex and relatable characters, along with powerful world-building. I felt like I was right there in the story rooting for Tom. Recommended.

Intense and emotional historical fiction novel

“The Thundering Smoke: The Price of Freedom” by Guy Quigley is a powerful historical fiction novel set during the Irish Liberation War, following Thomas Sutton as he flees to Africa after tragedy strikes his family. The novel vividly describes the brutality of war and its emotional toll. Quigley was so descriptive in his writing that at times it left me emotional and angry; however, it really helped me in connecting to the characters and the struggles they faced. He truly brought the intensity of war and the loss associated with it to life. This is the first book in this series, and I’m definitely curious to see what comes next in this intense trilogy.

The Thundering Smoke refers to Mosi-oa-Tunya, the breathtaking waterfalls of Zimbabwe. However, the internal world of this book’s protagonist is also as tumultuous as thundering waters. The book is set in Rhodesia, Zimbabwe’s former name. It is a riveting tale of courage, friendship and a past that won’t cease haunting the protagonist Tom Sutton. Definitely a book that’s worth reading and that had me on the edge of my seat.

A spirited, fast-paced start to a gripping fantasy seriesThe Thundering Smoke: Book 1 — The Price of Freedom hooked me from the first chapter. The central conflict—freedom at a heavy cost—drives the narrative forward without feeling like a tired trope; instead, it’s explored through living characters and believable consequences
